TOM Petty and the Heartbreakers The Last DJ (Warner) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
From the title track of The Last DJ, a lament for the days when radio didn’t have industry cock shoved far enough down its throat to choke an entire nation, to Joe, about a music CEO preying on would-be poets and teenage tramps, you just gotta say, “Right on, Tom!” Sure, it could be seen as the embittered braying of a veteran no longer in the spotlight, but regardless of where it comes from, it’s still pure truth about the sorry state of the music industry. And few people could say it better than Tom Petty, with his voice of world-weary cool. Running a slow rock groove complete with smooth orchestral arrangements, this is easily Tom Petty’s best in a while, and more than makes up for that Mary Jane business.
