Toronto's Tony Allen, fiddler in the Backstabbers, has turned back time on his new disc. The violinist's first solo record is loaded with traditional bluegrass tracks like Old Joe Bone and Down By The River. Each song features Allen's quick bowing, but it's the singer/songwriter's infectious vocals combined with Kristine Schmitt's complex harmonies that make this more than just your average bluegrass collection.
Even the instrumentals are top-notch. The Wandering Boy's simple yet effective banjo and fiddler interplay makes you wish you'd been a barn-stomping musician in the 20s.
