As the title makes clear, stringed instrument master Furtado gives his electric a break for this album, which provides an intimate and engaging portrait of the artist at work in a stripped-down live setting. His slide work is spot on – he goes for a relaxed solid vibe that emphasizes the feel and tone of each note rather than trying to impress with speed and flash. The same goes for the banjo-picking bits, including impressive takes on the Beatles’ I Will and a dirge-like reading of Tom Petty’s Running Down A Dream. The disc comes full circle with the traditional Cypress Grove Blues, which has all the voodoo swamp magic you’d expect from Furtado.
Furtado plays the Silver Dollar Saturday (July 30).
