In a rare instance of life-art synchronicity, indie three-piece Trespassers William, whose vaseline-lensed dream pop is tailor-made for teen soaps like The O.C. (which has featured several TW tracks), actually hail from the storied Orange County region of California. Sadly, Having (the trio’s third LP) could benefit from a dose of the high-impact sex, drugs ‘n’ drama contained in your average O.C. episode. Anna-Lynne Williams breathes whispery nothings about feeling lovelorn and that moment right before you kiss someone over 11 tracks of gently plodding beats and barely there ambient synths and strings. It’s mood music for a very particular mood (lying in bed with the lights out), and it’s lovely in a formless, implacably emotional way that surely plays well as a soundtrack to scenes where secret crushes are revealed. Unfortunately, Having needs more life – even a jolt of the laid-back spark in classic Sundays’ tunes – or at least some minor stylistic variation to work as more than just fuzzy aural wallpaper.
