TRIO BEYOND

Jazz group Trio Beyond formed in 2003 for the sole purpose of covering the works of the late legendary drummer Tony Williams. The group, which consists of drummer Jack De Johnette, organist Larry Goldings and guitarist John Scofield, had plenty of material to choose from – Williams recorded more than 20 albums in his short life – but they decided to reinterpret tunes from his influential fusion act, Lifetime. Saudades is remarkable, to say the least. The band is able to retain Williams’s energy and essence while injecting their own personality into Lifetime’s challenging oeuvre. This double disc includes plenty of unforgettable moments, including Scofield’s blistering solo on album closer Emergency. Of course, the drumming is nothing short of amazing.
