Trio Kavkasia are an American group who specialize in singing the music of the republic of Georgia, or Georgian polyphony, which is rife with unexpected chords, beating dissonances and ringing unison tones. Sung in three-part harmony, these traditional songs from cities and hamlets across Georgia date back to the 10th century or earlier and range from wedding and work songs to carols and hymns. They employ harmonies North Americans might be a tad unused to, and most are sung a cappella or with sparse instrumentation. The effect is lovely and haunting. The lyrics are translated on the liner notes, and you can get an idea of what you are listening to from translated songs titles like He Called A Great Army Strong As A Mountain and Dali Is Giving Birth On The Cliffs. World music lovers with an interest in choral music will appreciate this.
See the Trio at the Church of the Holy Trinity Saturday (January 13) and at York U Sunday (January 14).
