Remember Wave, those one-hit wonders who scored big with a pop ditty about going to California and drinking tequila, despite the fact that they were Canadian and vaguely unattractive? Think of Turin Brakes as a more talented Wave with UK accents and worse-off teeth. And, boy, do they love summer. Jackinabox is all about leaving your cares behind and falling asleep with your best girl on a sandy beach, driving around in convertibles and singing about how “life ain’t always easy” and you “can’t buy sunshine.” I’m more of a black turtleneck/Russian lit type, but if you’re the kind of dude who voluntarily wears T-shirts with surfboards on them, you’ll probably dig cranking these sunny acoustic tunes at your next volleyball game.
Turin Brakes play the Mod Club tonight (Thursday, July 21).
