TWISTA

Rating: NN

The best part of album No. 7 by rap’s Micro Machines Man is What Would Twista Do If He Wasn’t Rappin’? The track finds the motormouth MC playing racetrack announcer and auctioneer and is as funny as it is effortless.

Famous since his cameo on Kanye West’s breakout single, Slow Jamz, Twista has unbelievable diction yet can’t make a satisfying album. Trying not to be typecast as the fastest rapper, he fails to flex his best skill, instead falling back on lyricism over budget beats. The result is a lot of charmless, unclever couplets like “Your life is secondary / I fuck my secretary” at a decelerated tempo. It’s like watching a Maserati rolling below the speed limit: at 40 kph, you can see the dents.
