It’s been hit-and-miss for Van Morrison lately, and with Magic Time he’s just punching the clock. Throughout the album his vocal performances sound uninspired, which is understandable considering the half-assed job he’s done on the lyrics. Instead of investing his brain power in coming up with fresh wordplay, Morrison prefers to rely on clichéd phrases and obvious rhymes – even going for a “moon” and “spoon” couplet in Just Like Greta – though I guess throwing in a tune called Keep Mediocrity At Bay suggests he hasn’t lost his sense of humour.
