The soundtrack of Kenneth Lonergan's breakthrough film, You Can Count On Me, is really more of an E-Squared label sampler than music composed to support the onscreen drama.
It's as if Steve Earle cut a deal to allow the movie company to use five tracks from the Mountain album -- his fabulous bluegrass collaboration with the Del McCoury Band -- on the condition that they'd also take a track by his weaker-selling labelmates like Bap Kennedy, Marah, the V-roys and Cheri Knight.
It makes for a decent rock 'n' twang mixed disc, yet everything but 6 String Drag's unimaginative remake of Sir Doug's Mendocino has already been released and is readily available. Just one new, original tune would've greatly enhanced the soundtrack's sales potential, but sadly, the song-sapped Earle didn't have it in him.
