DUSK OFF YOUR HAT AND COME DAWN YOUR INSTRUMENT, THE AURORA COMPILATION (Black Mountain Music) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Packed in a handsome tin box, the cryptically titled Dusk Off Your Hat And Come Dawn Your Instrument, The Aurora Compilation grew out of the Ottawa indie pop festival of the same name but could be the house collection for Toronto’s own Wavelength series. The cross-Canada compilation features new or unreleased tunes by bands like Sonora, Two-Minute Miracles, Wayne Omaha and Kid Sniper. It ranges from the full-blown space rock of Mean Red Spiders and the whispered softcore of Tiger Saw to White Star Line’s vibe-laden cover of John Lennon’s India. As a snapshot of the Canadian indie underground it works well, though the idea of releasing outtakes and demos by bands with only a handful of proper recordings under their belts is a bit puzzling.
