Self-described folk power trio Vinnick Sheppard Harte have many tools at their disposal – a nice range between their voices (Elana Harte is the raspy alto, Suzie Vinnick the sweet soprano and Kim Sheppard falls somewhere in the middle), solid support from folks like sometime Norah Jones sideman Kevin Breit, Canuck bass MVP Maury Lafoy and Kurt Swinghammer, and enough talent to stand up as solo performers. Unfortunately, the whole doesn't quite match up to the sum of its parts, at least not on this recording. Divided between AC-format-friendly originals and obvious covers (Big Yellow Taxi, These Boots Are Made For Walking), My Favourite Shirt is dull. The members don't exploit their contrasting vocals to full effect, and the generic hooks and melodies on their self-penned songs stay in the safety zone.
Vinnick Sheppard Harte launch their CD at Hugh's Room Saturday (January 13).
