Virginia Rodrigues Mares Profundos (Edge/Universal) Rating: NN

Rating: NN

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that new opera fan David Byrne was behind Virginia Rogrigues’s arty popera-style reinterpretation of the classic Afro-sambas songcycle created by Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes. But it actually seems to be the work of Joe Boyd, who has hired Caetano Veloso to act as artistic director and brought in the strings, horns and mezzo-sopranos to accompany Rodigues’s stiffly proper Marian Anderson-style reading of the modern Brazilian hymns. Unfortunately, much of the rhythmic power at the core of the music has been lost in this high-brow translation, but it should do well in recital halls where dancing is forbidden.
