If Toronto held a contest to find its own Of Montreal, Vivek Shraya would win hands down. After three records of traditional pop songs, Shraya has gone the way of Kevin Barnes, layering electropop sounds with an array of guitars and sweet, catchy vocals. While he's always been talented, it's only now that he seems to have found himself. On Fevered, a raucous rock song, the Torontonian is at his most confident, while the Jamie Lidell-like dance track Your Name shows off his range. As infectious as this is, it's not perfect. Most of the songs could use a few more layers, and not all of them are hits; the repetitive verses on Chemistry are grating, but Shraya's onto something. It's only a matter of time until he breaks big.
Shraya's listening party hits Lot 16 tonight (Thursday, May 24).
