Rating: NNNNN

Slum Village founding member and one-half of cosmic soul duo Platinum Pied Pipers, who present songs from their fab debut, Triple P (Ubiquity), as part of the Beats, Breaks & Culture Festival on Harbourfront’s mainstage Friday (July 8) at 9:30 pm.

Gene McDaniels | Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse

“About 11 years ago I played this record for Jay Dilla, who wanted to borrow it, so I left it for him under some bushes. When I asked him for it back, he said somebody must’ve swiped it, because he never got it. The samples never showed up on his records, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I finally found another copy in Amsterdam and I’ve fallen in love with it all over again. Gene McDaniels is the black Bob Dylan.”

Tiombe LOCKhart | The Tiombe Lockhart Bootleg

“It’s the recording that got her a major-label deal and the thing I heard that made me want to bring her onto our project. This album has the party anthems and the ‘I’ve had too much to drink’ songs that I’ve been feeling lately.”

PUBLIC ENEMY | Yo! Bum Rush The Show

“This has been in high rotation lately. I inherited my copy from Baatin of Slum Village when his mom turned into a religious nut and made him get rid of all his hiphop records. Sad for him, great for me, because this is one of my top three favourite records of all time. The production is so innovative, it still stands up today. It’s like Madlib times 1,000!”
