WARSAWPACK Stocks & Bombs (G7 Welcoming Committee) Rating: NNN
Rapper Lee Raback of Hamilton-based agit-prop hiphop crew Warsawpack has both the intelligence and the rhyme skills necessary to back up his group's dogma in a way that most politico punks don't. His visceral spitting and hissing through Stocks & Bombs, blasting everything from Baby Bush fascism (Wolfblitzer) to the lemming-like nature of consumer culture, will warm the cockles of any socialist heart. The problem here is the music. Onstage, Warsawpack are great at tempering their aggro-punk attack with horn-brightened funk flava, but the tunes on Stocks & Bombs sound virtually identical and lack the sweaty passion of their performances. Kinda like that dude in your Marxism class who keeps making the same half-assed argument again and again. Sigh.
