W.A.S.P.

Rating: NN

Though they’ve put out a record almost every year for the past decade, W.A.S.P. are probably best remembered for the Fuck Like A Beast kerfuffle and for Chris Holmes’s embarrassing appearance in the rockumentary The Decline Of Western Civilization (Part II: The Metal Years), where he’s drunk as a fucking lord and acting like a doofus in a pool while his mom stands by. Now they’re giving us the first episode of a two-part concept album that tells the story of Jesse Slane, who’s sent to an orphanage full of nuns. After years of abuse, he winds up living on the street and becomes the “Neon God.” It’s a classic metal tale you might find in the journal of a 15-year-old misfit. Passages like “Lucy and Mary licked the blood from my face as I had sex with them” are zealously wailed with heartfelt sincerity accompanied by the guitar noodling that makes every song an anthem. The narrative might be cheesy, but you wanna let ’em rock because they’re W.A.S.P. W.A.S.P. play the Opera House Monday (August 9).
