Montreal electro-garage-rock-disco punks We Are Wolves have been generating buzz for a year because of their incendiary live shows, which they've now attempted to distill into this debut album. They don't think they've quite managed to capture their live energy here, but that doesn't mean the album sounds like a clinical studio project. Distortion washes over the angular synth and guitar riffs, and frantic screams echo around the driving beats. It's fun, weird music, but you have to be willing to deal with a certain amount of shouting and noise. While not all the instrumental songs are as effective as those with vocals, the promise shown here makes it easy to overlook that. We Are Wolves play Friday (November 4) at the Drake.
