Weakerthans

Rating: NNN

A hometown live document by Prairie alts the Weakerthans isn’t going to have huge draw outside their established fan base, so the question is whether there’s enough here to tempt the already converted to drop more dough.

[rssbreak]

Despite a moment during Wellington’s Wednesdays when frontman John Samson gives an audience member named Ernesto his guitar, lets him loose (with mixed results) and then veers into a few bars of New Order’s Temptation, not much goes off script.

No covers, no improv jams and no obscure cuts it’s a straightforward run through a balanced selection from their four albums, recorded impeccably and without audible errors. With Reunion Tour almost four years old and no new album slated for 2010, likely the key words here are “fan satiation.”

Top track: One Great City!

The Weakerthans play the Queen Elizabeth Theatre May 26.
