Weezer

New and Notable Releases

Rating: NN

After the five year lay-off between Weezer’s last two records, it was hard to see what Rivers Cuomo’s writer’s block was all about. He seemed to be able to crank out snappy two-minute power pop tunes in his sleep, but as the middling Maladroit shows, maybe there is something to taking your time and doing a bit of editing. A slightly slower pace aside, there’s nothing fundamentally different between these songs and the tunes on 2001’s self-titled comeback disc, but overall, Maladroit lacks the full-throttle, no filler approach that left even the most jaded listener with a stupid grin pasted on their face last time out. The same, but different.
