We know Weezer aren't going to put out a totally crappy album, although fans would probably give them a lot of leeway, based on the whole longevity/indie coolness factor. Make Believe kicks off with the single Beverly Hills, which sounds pretty much like Sugar Ray to me. Not a great start. But it's still all good, basically a solid selection of the quirky pop rock tunes you'd expect. There are nice piano bits and fuzzy-wuzzy guitars, as well as strings and sax. The now Harvard-educated Rivers Cuomo supplies characteristically self-deprecating lyrics that show he's been doing some indie rock boy soul-searching or something, cuz isn't that what indie rock boys with book learnin' do?
Weezer hit the Kool Haus Friday (May 6).
