WES MONTGOMERY

Rating: NNN

Even if you didn’t know Valentine’s Day was right around the corner, the flowery graphics and typography on the generic-looking batch of new arrivals in the jazz section would be a tipoff. There are a few new artist-oriented titles in the Concord Music Group’s For Lovers series of seasonably romantic collections programmed for easy listening and soft jazz tastes and aimed at buyers more concerned with getting a consistent program of sweet tunes than hearing the performer’s finest artistic achievements.

Like the others in the series, the Wes Montgomery set includes selections from a variety of settings in no particular order, steering clear of the guitarist’s genuinely exciting moments to deliver his softest, most gently picked ballads, designed to work as chilled background accompaniment to your steamy foreground action. Being Montgomery, it’s all tastefully played it just may lull you to sleep.
