Will Currie specializes in a certain kind of happy piano pop that would sound at home over the opening credits of a 70s TV show, which is not actually a complaint. Think Billy Joel with some occasional Queen guitar heroics, and then tone that down to an earthier, more restrained indie level.
Granted, on paper that sounds kind of dubious, but then you realize you’ve listened to the album several times in a row and you’re about to hit play again. It’s got the sunny-day energy of fuzzed-out power pop, with the wall of guitars replaced by pounding keys.
Will Currie & the Country French rock the Drake Friday (June 13), midnight.
