Wintersleep's sophomore disc is a hard one to pin down. For the most part, it's a dramatic and epic effort that would suit small clubs or big arenas. The contrasts are all over the record. Weighty Ghost is catchy, but it's hard not to imagine Eddie Vedder singing it, while Archaeologist is more a traditional indie rock song.
At times, Wintersleep are brilliant -- Dead Letter perfectly balances heartfelt words with equally passionate instrumentation -- but sometimes they're just self-indulgent, as on the eight-minute closer. Wintersleep are definitely going places, but where they'll end up is anyone's guess. Wintersleep play the Mod Club Friday (November 16).
