There’s an incredible energy to the new album by Wynton Marsalis and his quintet, a live set recorded at the House of Tribes, a community theatre on New York’s Lower East Side. Compared to the controlled aesthetic of a studio album, this feels the way jazz is supposed to – comfortable and scruffy, with lots of distinct crowd voices going “Yehhh” and “Damn, that’s funky!” that are just audible when the beat gets hot. It’s also spontaneous-sounding despite the fact that the record is composed of renditions of songs by masters like Monk and Parker.
