Yeah Yeah Yeahs

It’s Blitz! (Interscope)

Rating: NNNN

The advance word that Nick Zinner was putting down his guitar and plugging in the keyboards for It’s Blitz was substantially overplayed. Yes, Skinner gets more synthetic on a few songs, including grand-slam-off-the-first-pitch opener Zero, but it’s still an unmistakably rock sound for the scrappy New York trio (though Karen O now permanently resides in L.A.).

In other words, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs haven’t changed as much as they’d like us to believe. They still write great pop rock songs. In addition to Zero’s anthemic power, Karen O gives in to her inner Maps on the expansive and dreamy Skeletons and on tearjerker Hysteric. Meanwhile, Zinner’s masterful sonic textures define the songs perhaps even more than her voice, which gets closer to Chrissie Hynde’s with every album.
