YOKO ONO

Rating: NN

Two out of three Beatles fans agree that Yoko Ono would be their least favourite dinner guest. Not that she’s overly concerned with what nostalgia buffs think about her, as she makes clear on the delightfully defiant title track of her new Yes, I’m A Witch recording, a collaborative set on which Ono’s accompanied by a different artist on each track. As with similar high-concept projects, most of it doesn’t work, and the most successful pairings are often the ones you’d least expect. The songs Ono does with Peaches, Le Tigre, DJ Spooky and Sleepy Jackson are all annoying rubbish, easily outdone by the tunes involving Porcupine Tree, Polyphonic Spree, Cat Power and Craig Armstrong. Unfortunately, the disasters far outnumber the few listenable moments.
