IDEAS To Care For A Baby Bird
EP (independent) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Toronto softies Young Ideas keep things simple on their five-song To Care For A Baby Bird EP. With an unusual, guitarless combination of piano, upright bass, drums and horns that occasionally has the unsettling overtones of a less jokey Ben Folds Five, the trio’s tinkly piano pop is like a less wimpy Belle & Sebastian, while the widescreen production makes understated songs like the St. Norbert’s Yard seem larger than they really are. It’s an impressive beginning — one that leaves you wondering what Young Ideas could do on a properly produced full-length album and how they’ll pull this off live. Young Ideas play Lounge 88 Saturday at 1 am.
