Zebrahead MFZB (Red Ink) Rating: NN
Zebrahead's tunes have a certain catchiness and an energy, both of which manage to save this disc from being a total write-off. But its positive aspects are greatly overshadowed by a total lack of originality. Mired in the banal and overplayed worlds of rap metal and Offspring-style California sunshine punk, Zebrahead do pretty much nothing to take these styles and make them their own. Every riff, melody and beat sounds as if you've heard it somewhere before, and that's because you probably have, over and over again. Still, the kids'll have a larff smashing themselves against each other to some of these tunes at summer festivals to come. See what they sound like live when Zebrahead play the Opera House tonight (Thursday, November 27).
