ZWAN Mary Star Of The Sea (Warner) Rating: NN Rating: NN
Pumpkinheads delighted by the prospect of Billy Corgan returning to a more guitar-oriented sound with his new group, Zwan, may not be overjoyed by what Mary Star Of The Sea has in store. Corgan has definitely dropped the orchestral pretensions, but the endless guitar noodling and layered textures courtesy of Matt Sweeney (Chavez) and David Pajo (Slint, Papa M) unfortunately lead backwards into prog rock territory. On top of the convoluted jams that go no place in particular -- the title track cracks the 14-minute barrier -- Corgan's whiny voice sounds more shrill and grating than ever. Ugh.
