ZZ TOP

Rating: NNN

The popularity of the White Stripes’ garage sound hasn’t escaped Billy Gibbons and crew, who dirty up the already nasty ZZ Top grooves on Mescalero. As might be expected, there’s nothing radically new here. Other than the slamming swipe at Lowell Fulson’s proto-funk classic Tramp, it’s basically the same badass blues ‘n’ boogie they’ve been cranking since before they swore off shaving. But the added crunch really does make for a more enjoyable bite.
