Amy Honey

AMY HOney (Red Cat) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

Picture the Shangri-las, attitude, leather jackets ‘n’ all, transported to a corn-huskin’ hoedown in a tiny prairie town. That’s what BC belter Amy Honey evokes on Do Ya Wanna Play Darts, an updated twangy take on Leader Of The Pack. And that’s just the second track on her solo debut! Honey, formerly of alt-rockers Clover Honey, is a clever charmer with an endearingly laid-back vocal delivery and a knack for genre fusion and neat hooks, and this self-titled disc is a thrilling hayride of gentle country twang, punk rock punchiness and witty lyrical twists that doesn’t stop till you’re drinkin’ whiskey long after sunset. She throws in some cool surprises: the oddball Time Machine is a sweaty, synthy 60s frug number, and the hidden track is straight-up beatnik blues.

Amy Honey cavorts into Sneaky Dee’s Sunday (August 10) and then hits Lee’s Palace Wednesday (August 13).
