Asking for more than just pocket change

Musicians took over a few street corners on Tuesday to perform for passerby and to raise money for War Child at it’s annual Busking for CHANGE event.

But the scene in front of Union Station this afternoon was more of a collaborative jam session than a performance.

When there was a last minute cancellation by the Balconies, singer-songwriter Robyn Dell’Unto and Luther Mallory, vocalist for the local band Crush Luther, joined together to fill in the time gap.

Just before they began their impromptu gig, a War Child volunteer took a permanent marker to a sign they had displaying performance times for the day. In the 1:00 p.m. slot, she crossed out the cancelled band’s name and wrote in “Skin Suit”: Dell’Unto and Mallory’s last-minute choice of a band name.

They played cover songs and took requests from the crowd, including a bus load of people from Orangeville who not only gave the artists their spare change, but also sandwiches and other snacks.

After Skin Suit made their debut performance (and it’s members made their way to sets that they were actually scheduled to play) Ben Rispin and Rob Pasalic of Saint Alvia took over that section of sidewalk.
