BLACK BELLES at the Horseshoe, Friday, June 15. Rating: NN
From the Mummies’ bandages to the White Stripes’ red and white, a striking costume has often been used in garage rock to enhance the music and create mystique.
The Black Belles‘ gothy vibe certainly draws the eye, but their music failed to hit during this set.
There were moments when the trio (keyboardist Tina NoGood was absent) generated some head-nodding up at the front, and people seemed to enjoy a lot of the set. But there was nothing to latch onto: no memorable hooks or choruses.
Even their cover of the Knickerbockers’ rave-up, Lies, failed to ignite.
