Who: The burliest member of Alexisonfire, Wade MacNeil could also give Dallas Green some competition as the band’s most soulful. But while Green sings about sad feelings and landscapes, MacNeil unapologetically chronicles his taste for casual love and the hangover haze.
Why: Before you pull out that damning emo rubberstamp, check MacNeil’s stripped-down set-up: just him, a clean electric guitar and pianist Sammi Bogdanski filling in the rhythm. Plus, he’s been percolating the Black Lungs for years now and the debut is way overdue, so MacNeil is probably burning to play these songs live.
Buzz factor: Medium-high. We’ve seen what an Alexisonfire side project can do (City and Colour), but MacNeil’s coming at it from an unconventional angle, making the success barometer harder to gauge. We do know BL is a labour of love, so you can be sure he’ll give it everything onstage.
