BRASSTRONAUT at the Gladstone, Friday, June 15. Rating: NNNN
If Vancouver's Brasstronaut were bummed about their divine Mean Sun album getting overlooked for the Polaris Prize, they showed no signs of it at the Gladstone.
The six-piece delivered a sonically massive (like, Spiritualized proportions) set of brass-tinged space rock built on bass groove, syncopated drumming and cascading layers of trumpet, synths and EWI. Keyboardist Edo Van Breemen's breathy vocals had a newfound coarseness from weeks on the road, and some of the best moments came during the clarinet solos, which is not something I thought I'd ever write.
