house of props (55 st. lawrence, 416-516-7760)
CONCEPT Less a club than a warehouse for film props by day and a unique party venue on weekends. Since it's basically just a raw space, each party's decor and theme are unique, a strategy that's making it one of the most talked-about new sites. Visual impact is enhanced by all the weird stuff on hand.
VIBE Varies depending on the type of event, which could be anything from fetish party to underground house music event to private corporate do. You can't just show up and know what to expect; look for flyers or check out the Web site, www.cheyneevents.com.
SECURITY The in-house security team is on the ball, friendly and unobtrusive but definitely keeps an eye on everything. If the event isn't being handled by them, your experience might be different.
BATHROOMS Huge, considering this isn't a real club. A little makeshift and not always pristine, but at least there aren't long lineups. Curtains instead of doors on the stalls look nice, but be careful to look for feet before walking into one.
VALUE Cover charge is usually high, and drinks are also pricey. But this isn't a high-end yuppie venue (unless there's a corporate party), and keeping a place this size open all night with a substantial staff isn't cheap.
