478 Queen West 416-504-5127CONCEPT A club but not a club. Most of the week it's a vegetarian restaurant, but come Sunday it's the Red Beet Lounge, one of the most consistent Sundays in town. Originally intended to be a mellow lounge night, over the past year it's grown to become regularly packed. Fressen has now started a Thursday night run by folks associated with the OM festival and holds the occasional one-off.
VIBE Friendly and very mixed. You get b-boys dancing next to hippies and indie kids. The flagship Sunday night is a mix of hiphop, soul, funk and whatever else the DJs feel like dropping, peppered with live freestyling.
VALUE Pretty cheap compared to a real club. Generally, there's no cover, a good selection of average-priced drinks and free finger food. Coat check is do-it-yourself, and there's no washroom attendant to tip.
BATHROOMS Small, but I've never had to wait in line to use them, even on the busiest nights. Have yet to see them get gross.
