VIBE Had enough of the luxe lounge clubs? This is the complete opposite: a grungy basement, edgy music, mixed crowd, dirty couches and sweat dripping from the ceiling. Depending on the night, you can find electro or roots reggae or an eclectic mix of punk and soul. Empty some nights, rammed past capacity others. You never really know.
FEATURES Algae-encrusted fish tanks illuminated by black lights, random neon decorations, fake vines hanging from the ceiling and ready-made ham sandwiches at the bar. Surprisingly good sound considering the makeshift quality of the system, one of the advantages of a low ceiling.
VALUE Low cover (if there is one), cheap beer and shots, no mandatory coat check and definitely no washroom attendant waiting to be tipped.
BATHROOMS The dirtiest bathrooms of all the (legal) DJ venues in Toronto, next to the Comfort Zone. But word is the Zone plans to renovate its notorious facilities, so Club 56 may soon hold the title.
