THE COMMUNIST’S DAUGHTER 1149 Dundas West

CONCEPT Apparently Dundas West is going to be the new hot spot, but so far there isn’t much here. This little hole in the wall has a good buzz but nothing in common with dance clubs or chi-chi lounges. At first glance, it looks like just another shitty bar, but then you notice all the indie scenesters hanging out and realize that the jukebox is too well stocked for a real dive.
VIBE A casual sit-and-drink place and more than a bit grungy. Part of its appeal is that everyone gets to play DJ with the jukebox. This means that sometimes Belle and Sebastian will play right after an old Rod Stewart fave. What’s not to love about that?
VALUE As cheap as it looks. The bartender actually bartered with us over our tab at the end of the night and had to ask us how many drinks we downed. Definitely no cover, coat check or washroom attendant – it’s soooo not that kind of place. BB
