Colin Munroe

at the Cameron (408 Queen West), Thursday (March 6), midnight and the Annex Wreckroom (794 Bathurst), Friday (March 7), 8 pm.

Who: A self-produced upstart singer from North Gower/Ottawa. Described as “idiosyncratic and ambitious,” this Beatles-influenced vocalist has worked with Ray Robinson, Glenn Lewis, Divine Brown, Saukrates, Moka Only and Sean Price, among others.

Why: Did his stop-motion video for World Of Pain grab your attention? It caught the eye of 300,000 other YouTubers, and for good reason. It’s sincere, quirky and innovative. And if that didn’t intrigue you, maybe Dallas Austin flying Munroe to Atlanta and offering to release his debut, Don’t Think Less Of Me, in the U.S. and internationally will inspire you to check him out.

Buzz factor: Being prominently featured on Kanye West’s and Perez Hilton’s blogs for his impressive remix of Flashing Lights, somehow managing to sound as good as the butter-smooth Dwele, and turning the anti-paparazzi protest into an anthem for starry-eyed dreamers on the wrong side of the velvet rope sure will make people curious. There’s great pop potential in Colin Munroe.
