Cyril Hahn

CYRIL HAHN at Wrongbar, Friday January 11. Rating: NNN

Last year was a pretty good year for Cyril Hahn.

The Swiss-born, Vancouver-based DJ and producer received approval from the likes of Diplo, The xx, and BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, while the remixes on his SoundCloud page racked up thousands of plays and downloads. Making his Toronto debut Saturday night, Hahn wasted no time proving why he’s one to watch, opening with his morphine-paced remix of Mariah Carey guilty pleasure Touch My Body.

This was received with hearty applause from a packed Wrongbar, and the DJ proceeded to play a deft set of deep house, 90s R&B, and his takes on current pop (Solange’s Losing You, California up-and-comers Haim’s Save Me).

A man of few words, Hahn let the music serve as an introduction to his talent, which should continue to gain attention in 2013. When it did come time for him to speak, he played Destiny Child’s Say My Name (and not the trio’s tepid recently-released comeback single), and the crowd gleefully obliged his request for a sing-along.
