Gracious Guru

GURU with KRUMB SNATCHA and BLESS at the Opera House, September 13. Tickets: $24.50-$35. Attendance: 550. Rating: NNN Rating: NNNNN

anyone who’s been to a hiphop show expects a security screen, but it was beyond tight for the Guru show at the Opera House Friday night. There were two checks with the metal detector per patron, plus in-depth examinations of Zippos, key chains and cellphones — everything.

Lots of hassle for Guru, but the mellow-voiced maestro made it all worthwhile, busting out Moment Of Truth as soon as he hit the stage.

The hits kept coming — GangStarr hits, that is. Guru didn’t perform any solo material until nearly halfway into the set, and even then he only performed one Jazzmatazz track. Giving love to cohorts Krumb Snatcha and Montreal’s Bless seemed to be bald-headed slick’s main priority. Much of the night, Guru stood in the shadows, looking on approvingly as his proteges let the words rip.

When he had to, Guru took control of the microphone, showing who everyone was there to see. A solid, if unspectacular performance by one of hiphop’s steadiest MCs. Next time, bring Primo along, too.
