Keith Ape lets us join his Underwater Squad

KEITH APE at the Hoxton, Thursday, August 13. Rating: NNNN

At the start of his set, all Keith Ape had to say was, “I don’t speak English but – UnderwaterSIX,” and fans bolted toward the front of the stage for the Korean rapper’s first Toronto show. He was dressed for a cyber-dystopian world, and some of his fans showed up in medical masks.

Ape’s crew, Underwater Squad, joined him onstage and were all given a chance to shine during the intoxicating set. Playing a catalogue of material generally overshadowed by his viral Internet hit It G Ma, he controlled the energy in the room for most of the show.

Things peaked as sirens sounded and one of his hit remixes, Hot Ninja, via Bobby Shmurda, got everyone jumping and jostling. He followed it up with an unreleased track of slow R&B that left half the audience swaying and the other half still leaping up and down from the last banger.

And when the first two bars of It G Ma started, fans squeezed between the gates to rush onto the stage to get a taste of being a part of the squad. The good-natured Ape got swallowed up by the crowd, losing one of his shoes – a red Chuck – in the process.
