Maniacal Mares of Thrace

MARES OF THRACE and ISOSCELES PROJECT at the 460, Friday, May 11 Rating: NNNN

As maniacally heavy as Mares of Thrace are on record, it’s even more impressive seeing it played live.

Witnessing such demonic, noisy sludge metal come out of two people can be a bit of a trip, so it was a bit unfortunate that the barely-elevated stage and sardine-packed room of the 460 prevented most of the audience from seeing the stage.

On a purely auditory level, the Calgary duo did justice to the enormity of their record, The Pilgrimage, but anyone curious to see how lead guitarist/growler Thérèse Lanz reproduced the crunchy, bone-crushing tone on her custom-modded baritone guitar or how Stef MacKichon carried the complex, jazzy rhythms on her five-cymballed drum set would have to have staked out a spot at the front long before they started playing.

There was slightly more breathing room for the next set by Isosceles Project, but they slayed the room regardless. The local prog-metal trio played long, multi-part instrumental epics, but managed to bring enough heavy to satisfy a crowd already satiated by the power of Mares of Thrace.
