Nobunny no problem

NOBUNNY, PEACH KELLI POP, POW WOWS and ACT CASUAL at The Shop, Sunday, June 26. Rating: NNNN

Everyone kept their sets short, fast and loud at this all-ages night at the Shop featuring Californian garage rocker Nobunny.

Act Casual (with members of Brutal Knights and School Jerks) opened with very loud, cathartic set coming out of ridiculously large amps. The band kept nearly falling apart before coming together again and again.

Pow Wows played sexy reverb-drenched blues-rock, with hints of Iggy and the Stooges and cowpunk and Ottawa’s Peach Kelli Pop kept their set of infectiously hyper garage-pop extra short, in anticipation of Nobunny’s set.

Somewhat of a cult favourite (at least one young lady in the audience was sporting bunny ears), Nobunny aka Justin Champlin was at home on the Shop’s basement non-stage. Backed by a small band (including Peach Kelli Pop’s Allie Hanion on drums) he transformed into some kind of punk rock muppet on speed, throwing the crowd into a moshing frenzy. At one point he had to affectionately ask folks to move back so he could do his thing.
