Parkas Summer Reunion Party

PARKAS SUMMER REUNION PARTY at El Mocambo. Friday, August 13 Rating: NNNN

“And so it begins, my life of crime” sang Parkas‘ Michael Brown, after being called onto stage by bassist Mark Rhyno. A brave move, kicking off the set with their hit, My Life of Crime, but Parkas pulled it off with characteristic low-key swagger.

It was good to hear these scruffy London/everywhere Ontario guys rock out again. Brothers Mark and Greg Rhyno (their parents were present), Brown, who now lives in Alberta, and guitarist Paul Thompson were in great form, especially considering they’re on hiatus.

Fans were swaying with lighters in the air by the second tune, and the set moved quickly through songs like Don’t Say No and Raggedy Ann. The wolf rug omnipresent at their early gigs was missing, but they did have a wolf projected behind them at one point.

A great opening set by Ben Gunning (Local Rabbits) and band, and effortless rock and roll moments (Brown knocked the microphone over by accident, really) made up for the night’s early ending and lack of encore. Hopefully they’ll do this again.
