PLASMA BLAST along with BLURTONIA at the Rivoli, April 28. Tickets: $5. Attendance: 25. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
guided by voices was fun, but not as fun as an all-ages matinee/ dual CD release party hosted by Blurtonia and Plasma Blast at the Rivoli Saturday. While not exactly well attended (blame the beautiful weather), the gig was a howl, mostly because the maulers in Plasma Blast strutted full-out like the rock stars they'll eventually become, vacant dance floor be damned. That, and it's kind of cool to see rock and roll in the middle of the day.
Guitarist Steve Scarlet and singer Marcus Ireland -- the latter sucking a lollipop to keep himself from smoking during the non-smoking show -- give fantastic pose, and as they tore through the disarmingly catchy selections from their new Detroit-damaged Smashed Hits platter, there was little to do but marvel.
Almost as head-turning as Plasma Blast producer Ian Blurton's Grizzly Adams look.
