‘Pussy power surge

Alabama Thunderpussy with Floating Widget at Club Rockit, July 4. Tickets:$10. Attendance: 40. Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

There was something awfully sweet about Virginian riff alchemists Alabama Thunderpussy ‘s new frontman Johnny Weils wishing us all a happy Canada at the outset of their July 4 performance at Rockit . Owing to the law of Sunday, the scheduling of a Dead Meadow performance that evening, a high price for two-band gig, a small scene of true rock lovers and a lack of advertising, the show was fairly under-attended.

Mind you, the faithful came out, including the ladies of Nice Cat, and Illuminati/Nice Cat/Underdrive drummer Jim Gering, who was greeted by Weils from the stage with an enthusiastic “Jim’s here. Now the party has started!”

They were rewarded with a strong set that featured jams from the band’s recent Relapse release, Fulton Hill, many of which had a Southern rock undertone but also a fuzziness and sludge factor that brought to mind bands like Sabbath and Kyuss.

The combination of frenzied rock vocals with sludge metal and super-fast riffs puts the band in an indefinable category, a fact that has caused many an outfit to have a hard time finding its perfect spot in the world of music. But with their constant touring and rad style, Thunderpussy are bound to forge a legacy.

I hope people bought merch. Thunderpussy affixed a sign to their table saying their van had been broken into on the second day of the tour and any help would be appreciated. After their energetic set, they’d earned some help.

Openers Floating Widget , the Montrealers accompanying the band on the tour, weathered a brief storm three songs in when a guitar amp died and they had to take a 10-minute break to fix it. But they kept the crowd entertained throughout.

Even if Widget sound similar to Thunderpussy, and somewhat less rad, this fun rock show deserves a bigger audience.
