Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat with Stereo Total, the Hawnay tROOF and KEYOP at the Tequila Lounge, November 26. Tickets: $10. Attendance: 250. Rating: NNNN
The small mountain of curious wired-up gizmos, air-raid sirens and keyboards piled in front of the Tequila Lounge stage by Mr. Quintron spelled trouble for headliners Stereo Total. At first it had seemed like a bold move for Euro-trash discobilly duo Stereo Total to let the organ-pounding New Orleans one-man orchestra open the show, but seeing the electronic artillery Quintron had set up, Stereo Total's daring gambit now looked like a huge tactical mistake.
It all started pleasantly enough with one of Miss Pussycat's typically twisted puppet shows -- this one involving a sewing party in which the fluffy characters are dosed with LSD by a mysterious old lady -- but as soon as the curtain fell, Quintron lit up his dual Drum Buddy devices and got down to house-wrecking business.
While kicking out a steady beat with his foot, Quintron used his right hand to punch out a simple organ riff and bashed on a snare and cymbal with his left as the spinning twin cylinders of his Drum Buddies threw sparks of light on the excited crowd writhing against his dance-floor control module.
Then, reaching over to one of the mechanical devices, sweaty, shirtless Quintron added demonic belches of squawking buzz that fit perfectly with the stuttering wheeze of his archaic organ as Miss Pussycat rattled her maracas, which were quaintly covered with quilted maraca warmers that matched her hot-pink outfit.
As Quintron beat one funky jam into the next, he seemed to be whipping himself deeper and deeper into a trance-like state.
By the time he lurched into the hypnotic rhythm of Mysterious Rangers, blurting out nonsense phrases while gazing upwards with a wild-eyed stare, it seemed like full-on possession. He'd given himself over to the music and was working on feel.
The shouts of the audience around him pushed his frantic pounding to ecstatic levels. When he set one of his Drum Buddies on fire for the big finale, it looked like the place might explode.
After that, Stereo Total could've played their jaunty electro-beat set surrounded by roaring albino tigers and it still would've been a letdown.
